On keeping up...

It's been a while since we posted anything. And yes, we're still up and going! Lately, it's been so difficult keeping up with all the social networking sites here and there, and keeping your personal sites updated is hard enough... And talk about the difficulty of uploading photos!

I kinda like this shortcut though, and I think we can now do this regularly. Pardon those who cannot see small details well, but at least you can have an overview of how SounDoze is through this collage.

Thank you to the unending support of friends and to those new folks we meet along the way.

P.S. If you happen to think we ain't playing nowhere anymore, do visit and watch at Salo (4/F Pads Legend Hotel). We play there every night, prime nights on Fridays and Saturdays. No Entrance Fee, No Dress Code. Ü

Let the music live on!

The evolution continues...

The only thing that's constant is change. At one point, we meet contentment and shut down our anticipation of what is to come. And then your world is shaken once more. Yet your heart undeniably says the music must go on...

If I am to recount how many times the band has gone through change, I would surely miss. The metamorphosis of our music is yet to be completed. Simply put, our music will change, all the time. But the change being referred to is the more tangible one, the band's structure. The whole framework made up of musicians sharing the same passion.

Last year, our bassist felt that our world was small enough for him. Our that we made his world smaller. Up until now, I never knew and understood. It was less of a pain to just let him go because it was made clear that that was what he wanted. So be it. Hear us out, dear friend, you know how we loved hearing you play the bass. And we all know too well that the unchartered territories we excitedly exlored together was a journey we can only make together. Thank you for the music. We are not in dire need to find someone to replace you immediately, we are just patiently awaiting for the right one, at the right time.

Before our former bassist left, a friend and co-artist joined the band in what I would call as a "May-December love affair." It ended before it has even begun. With that, I cease to say no more.

Then came early summer when my "kumai", former bandmate and partner-in-pregnancy, Che, came home from her Asian stint for a long vacation. Like a rehearsed cue, she was unquestionably welcomed back. Making music with her is definitely a delight and an experience worth cherishing. The long vacation seemed too short to spend together, she's now back in Malaysia. The band awaits for yet another one of her homecomings.

And with all hopes up, we welcome the newest addition to the family, my co-singer, Earl. He was merely an aquaintance a year back as a co-musician in this small city. I also can't say we are of the same generation, age-wise, but we met in a familiar realm - music. This young lad has a voice spelled as "p-o-t-e-n-t-i-a-l" and I openly share my personal realm with this wonderful talent. And as I came to learn from people coming and going, the essence is making the most out of the experience of making music. To greater heights and musical growth, I welcome you to SounDoze.

This may not be the last time I am writing about change. I know there are many more to come...and go. But whatever change we may go through, what's essential is we acknowledge and cherish what remains and what awaits. As I am writing this, I come to realize - the music has never changed, it has just grown. The people who have contributed to what it has become will definitely stay.

SounDoze, my band, my music.

The Music of SounDoze

SounDoze is a house name for acoustic music, having been playing in Puerto Princesa City for more than two years now. SounDoze has created a sound uniquely its own - offering a buffet of their own acoustic renditions of songs of different genres, from OPM to bossa nova to reggae to r&b to alternative, from classics to pop, from ballads to disco hits. More than that, they can create a totally new sound for a song that would seem vaguely familiar yet surprisingly different.

SounDoze has played in major venues in the city like Asturias Hotel, Hangar Zone, Dos Palmas, Kinabuch, Legend Hotel and Hotel Fleuris. Their simple yet elegant set-up brought life to weddings, parties, corporate events and conventions, serving clients from here and elsewhere. Their flexibility to make way for special requests to fit their clients’ themed events is indeed one of their charms.

SounDoze disproved that acoustic music is boring. To this band, the challenge of this misconception only made it easier to experiment on a wide spectrum of music. The combined geniuses of these musicians and singers and the magic of their harmony create a truly memorable listening experience. And a jamming session with them might just be a simple delight for the “surprised” and unaware jammers who are usually volunteered by their accompanying friends and co-guests, and even more for the group who end up playing requested songs for the first time, songs they never imagined they’d play…even for jamming’s sake.

SounDoze is Janis a.k.a. DJ Regie of iFM 99.9 on vocals, Verds a.k.a. d_Guru of iFM 99.9 on cajon/vocals/percussions, Mark on 2nd vocals, Emil on bass/vocals, Shad on guitars and Cyril on guitars/back-up vocals.

The band’s shows last October 13 and November 17 at the Scenario Bar, “Bossa Nova Night with SounDoze”, proved to be such a huge success, unexpectedly jam-packing the small bar twice. It bared the band’s jazz and world music influence even before the likes of Sitti and Sophia appeared in the mainstream. Aside from the classic yet unbeatable Sergio Mendes renditions, added were their own renditions of other types of songs experimented in bossa nova and samba.

Currently, SounDoze plays every Saturdays at the We Be Sushi Bar and Restaurant of Hotel Fleuris.
